Giving Back to Our Community

For over 10 years, Caras & Shulman has been an active sponsor of Austin Preparatory School. Yesterday was a beautiful day for The 32nd Annual Austin Open Golf Tournament – a fundraising event for the benefit of current and future graduating classes of Austin Prep. With continued growth in the performing arts, athletic, and other departments, net proceeds from the tournament will be used to expand campus parking.

It was a fantastic event and we are so happy to have participated. Caras & Shulman’s Raffi Donabedian, Mark Fiato, Charlie Miraglia, and Graham Ranks attended.

Caras & Shulman Mourns Death of Managing Partner, Kenneth P. Fluet, CPA

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Ken Fluet, our colleague, partner, and friend.

Ken was instrumental in the growth and success of Caras & Shulman and gave his heart and soul to the firm. Those who were fortunate to work with him will remember his unwavering commitment to the firm, our staff and his clients.

After spending time in the culinary industry, Ken changed directions and pursued a Bachelor of Science (with honors) from Fitchburg State College. He began his accounting career at Caras & Shulman in 1986 and became a partner in 1996. In his 33 years with the firm, Ken built a reputation as a devoted mentor for our staff, trusted advisor for our clients, and respected member of our partner team.

His dedication and humorous, friendly, and lively nature will be deeply missed.

Massachusetts’ New ‘Grand Bargain’ on Payroll Taxes, Minimum Wage, & Paid Leave

Massachusetts’ New ‘Grand Bargain’ on Payroll Taxes, Minimum Wage, and Paid Leave

On June 28, 2018, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker signed into law a ‘grand bargain’ bill that will raise the minimum wage and implement a state program increasing mandatory paid leave for workers.

Paid Family and Medical Leave

A state program will be established to provide workers with twelve weeks of paid family leave and up to twenty weeks of paid medical leave, with no more than twenty-six weeks per year total. Employees must be restored to the same or equivalent positions they previously held on return from leave.

Employees on leave are entitled to up to 80% of their regular wages, limited to half of the state’s average weekly wage ($670), then 50% of wages up to an $850 per-week on gross benefits.

New Payroll Tax

The law creates a new payroll tax to be paid by employers, employees and self-employed in order to fund this program.

Which Employers Are Responsible to Pay the New Payroll Tax?

1. Employers with less than 25 employees do not have to pay the tax, though employees are responsible;

2. Employers with more than 25 employees must pay the tax, unless they provide a wage benefit greater than or equal [...]
